Sometimes a good ski movie can console you during an off year, but we're already having a record-breaking snow season (ok, it's no 1998, but still, the quality and volume of the snow we've been getting this year is reminiscent of our days growing up in Utah for what that's worth). So maybe you don't need a powder porn flick to fuel your stoke, but we're thinking that Steep (showing in a limited run at the Varsity) will be worth a viewing regardless. (It's a limited run, and we think tomorrow night is the last night, but we can't tell from the website or their phone recording, so you might want to hustle out and see it tonight.) more ›

tomorrow night. So excited, in fact, that we thought we'd go to the Google to find out what sorts of happenings are going to, well, happen tomorrow in celebration of the big release. more ›
YOUNG BLACK CULTURE: Studies claim that African-American male culture has continued to decline despite generally strong national economic growth. Central District Forum for Arts & Ideas with moderator Carl Livingston Jr. and a group of respected panelists discuss their attempts to "defy convention and support the success and progress of African-American boys." more ›
MUSIC: Tim O'Brien, Jerry Douglas, Chris Thile & How to Grow a Band, Darrel Scott Band, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, Uncle Earl, and many more at Wintergrass. Wintergrass is one of the biggest bluegrass festivals in the country, and this is one of the best line-ups they've had in some time. It's worth it to go see all the bands, or just to hang out in the lobby and jam out all weekend for free. more ›

We hate to use such a cliché for a post title, but in this case it's actually true. Seattlest had an opportunity to check out the children's improv show Hogwash this weekend, and despite worries that it would provide nothing but boredom for us (we're happily childless), we were suprised at how entertaining the production actually was, and would heartily recommend it for you Seattlest readers out there with little ones in tow. more ›
A note, before we get started: As requested, next time we try a new pub, we'll let you know ahead of time so you can try to win our money. more ›
Asia Argento has got her father's knack for horror. Sure, there are no limbs being severed as someone falls through broken glass, but the domestic horrors depicted in "The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things" are on par with the finest of her father's work. The film tells the story of Jeremiah. Raised by foster parents until the age of 7. Reclaimed by his abusive, alcoholic mother. Raped by her boyfriend. Abandoned by his mother. Claimed by his abusive, Christian grandparents.

Although we live relatively close to the the Ave and even head over there from time to time for cheap eats or discount athletic shoes we had no idea the place was living under the thumb of an East African gang. The owner of Schultzy's was on the TV last night and apparently he was also in the dark to the fact that he was behind on his protection money payments and claimed ignorance of any organized crime in the area. Of course the gang is actually involved in more modern-day activities such as drug distribution. more ›

Over the weekend, Seattlest had the chance to make it the Grand Illusion's showings of Love Crazy (1941) and Double Wedding (1937). (These aren't from the Thin Man series, but we thought more people would twig to a post titled "Nick & Nora" than "Bill & Myrna.") You have until Thursday to see them, at 7pm and 9pm showings. more ›

Comic book fans from around the world woke up today to breaking news of an imminent re-match between award-winning Canadian cartoonist Seth (aka Gregory Gallant) and local comic book publisher and Comics Journal executive editor Gary Groth. Their previous battle from the late '90s left many spectators wondering if another round of their incendiary exchanges would incite Groth's well-documented flair for explosives and firearms, provoking Mr. '30s Fetish to respond in kind. more ›
Earlier this week, Seattlest found ourselves taking part in an activity we hadn't done in a while: sorting through the wares of thrift stores on The Ave. Lately, we've been kinda feening for some end-of-summer sunglasses and shoes (always shoes), so we focused our efforts in those areas. Here's a quick review of our experiences at two local thrift faves--- more ›
Eric Bogosian is a jack of all trades. That's the feeling we get from taking a gander at his IMDB profile and his website's biography/list of works. Ah, but who the f*** is Eric Bogosian anyways? Good question, albeit one that has already been asked elsewhere. He's a playwright, having authored five full-length plays and six full-length solo works, as well as an actor and a screenwriter. In fact, he adapted his two best known plays, Talk Radio and SubUrbia, for the screen---films that were directed by Oliver Stone and Richard Linklater, respectively. Not bad, Bogosian. more ›
Look out residents of The Ave - The University District Street Fair is going to be all up in your face Saturday and Sunday. Seattlest is guessing that the choices you made in life many years ago will dictate whether you'll be in attendance or not, so this post is just a reminder for the people out there who are firmly in the "Of course I'm going...when is it again?" camp. Or maybe you haven't been seen on University Way since American Apparel was Pier One. Go down and have a look. more ›
