YOU AND EMILIANA: Supercute Italian-Icelandic chanteuse Emiliana Torrini hits the Croc tonight, still touring on her 2008 album Me and Armini. Emiliana ain't no Bjork; her music is a mélange of genres: a little trip-hop here, a little folk there, with a smattering of ska, psych-rock, and bossa nova for good measure. Here's proof of her musical diversity: Torrini both sang "Gollum's Song" over the credits of LoTR: The Two Towers and wrote "Slow" for Kylie Minogue. Now that's what we call delightfully all over the place. 9 p.m. // The Croc // 2200 2nd Ave // $15, 21+

PIZZA, COMEDY, AND KIDDOS: This month's Pagliacci comedy night is headlined by Derek Sheen, known for his heavy metal, pop culture, sci-fi, and comic book humor. Hellooooo, nerds! While usual host PRoK's Emmett Montgomery is enjoying his honeymoon, Paul Merrill takes over MC duties, and joining Paul on stage are his two sons Charlie (3) and James (9). Because nothing says comedy like some dude's kids. 8 p.m. // Broadway Pagliacci Pizza // 426 Broadway Ave E // free
PSYCHEDELIC INDIE POP: Starlight Mints are back at the Croc with a new album, Change Remains. Keyboardist Marian Love Nunez says, "Three appears to be the magic number for Starlight Mints, as far as years between album releases is concerned. Somehow, though, it seems just like yesterday we were begging for just a bit more time to wrap up Drowaton. I guess running a music venue, raising five children and working on multitudes of media projects, including writing ballads for pretty boy bands, will make time go a bit faster." So will meth, if we're making lists.
A couple days ago, we asked Seattlest readers for music recommendations, and while we haven't had a chance to really check out everything they recommended, there is one stand-out we have fallen for: Telekinesis. Essentially a solo project by local singer-songwriter Michael Benjamin Lerner, it's a fantastic mix of danceable garage rock with decent lyrics that don't make you wretch, reminiscent of Guided By Voices. And, in a fine twist of fate, tonight happens to be their CD release party, at the new Croc, for their self-titled debut. Headliner is Throw Me the Statue, another fine local band; it's 21 and over.
The pictures tell 1000 words, but here's 259 more on the new Crocodile.
The presale for the first wave of shows at the soon-to-be-reopened Croc starts, like, now. The lineup is as follows: Sat March 21 - Hot Buttered Rum & Everyone Orchestra, Fri Mar 27 - The Builders & Butchers, Sat Mar 28 - U.S.E., April 2 - Sebastien Grainger, Sat Apr 11 - Heartless Bastards, April 12 - The Ting Tings, April 14 - Dr. Dog & The Cave Singers, Sat Apr 18 - Vetiver, Fri May 1 - Ghost, May 28 - The Devil Makes Three. Tickets available here using presale code "THECROC." The general onsale isn't until this Saturday at 10 a.m., so get a head start by buying your tickets now. Yes, it's Ticketmaster, but we've heard that they're only using that ticketing service for the time being. It's hard to complain too much when our beloved Croc is almost back.
Remember when The Crocodile Cafe closed unexpectedly in December? Remember how up in arms everyone got, yelling about how likely it was that yet more new condos would be the result?
If you're wondering what happens to the lesser-known bands who used to play Seattle at the Croc, evidence from the sports world shows that you ought to look for them in Kent. Or not at all.
What the hell is it about Iceland? How can a cold and tiny isolated nation with only 300,000 people be responsible for so much weird and wonderful music? From Björk to Sigur Rós to Múm (who will be appearing at Neumo's in October, btw), Iceland's got a strong presence on the indie scene. Hmm...there must be something in all them hot springs.
When Seattlest received that fateful email from a friend, our immediate reaction was a roll of the eyes and an audible, drawn out, "Bull shit." No way would the one and only Beastie Boys play the legendary but very wee Crocodile Cafe. No way. Then came the Ticketmaster link all but confirming it. The Croc's website kept mum, not listing the show at all. Supposedly The End had been talking it up, but we wouldn't know since we haven't listened to that station since discovering KEXP years ago. A click of the mouse fractions of a second after tickets went on sale and we were in. Many of our friends and most of the Seattle area weren't as lucky. A quick check on Craig's List and Ebay showed that scalpers had done some of the immediate damage. Venting ensued.
Here's to the ice melting away because there are some good shows this week.

Another copious serving of live tunes (not to mention opportunities to leave your smelly apartment), courtesy of Seattlest. You can thank us later.
Maybe Seattle doesn’t have a river to dye green just for the occasion, but there are still scads of St. Patrick’s Day activities here in the Emerald City. We suppose you could go to the Seattle Center for the big celebration there, but most people would rather be out drinking, so for your Irish pub-crawling pleasure (cover charges as noted):
