Dishin': The Mobile Chowdown

Dishin' is typically about a single dish, but this week we give you a heads-up about an upcoming confluence of dishes.

To Market, To Market

A revamped, community-sponsored Queen Anne Farmers Market opens this afternoon at three at the corner of Queen Anne North and Crockett, replacing an earlier enterprise that had become mired in politics and recrimination. Patty Spahr, its director, has assembled a cast of local farmers and food vendors (Skillet, Sorrentino's, Secret Stash) despite hefty obstacles (street use, parking, health inspections, etc.).

So Is Skillet Shut Down or Open or What?

Ah, Skillet. First we hear the county shut you down for health code violations, and you might not show up in Columbia City tomorrow. And the county sure makes it look that way. ("Potentially hazardous foods at unsafe temperatures"?)

Fridays at lunch, once upon a time, Skillet parked mere steps from our office door. Awesome! Then they were asked to move, so they started parking about a half mile from our office door. Doable. But apparently they need to move again. Blatant self-interest compels us to ask: Won't someone in Lower Queen Anne or on the edge of Belltown give Skillet a new Friday lunch home? The sculpture park, perhaps? Email eat@skilletstreetfood.com if you've got an idea. (In better news, they're going to be at Mariner games, and their West Seattle debut was their busiest opening day ever. Step it up, Columbia City!)

  • Awwwwwww, yeeeeah! Seattle was named 2009 City of the Year by Fast Company Magazine. Go us.
  • Think again if you're up to no good in West Seattle, they have "Deadly Aim" on their side. Word to the wise, don't want to mess with a roller derby girls, especially this weekend.
  • Never thought you'd see this: Former GOP Nominee Dino Rossi challenge former Seahawk, Brock Huard to a spring roll-eating contest. Anything for charity, right? It's the last day to get your tickets to the ID Spring Roll 2009, a party/fundraiser for the International District's Downtown Chinatown. Oh, the Massive Monkees will be there too.

Recent trend that we're not fond of: Nearby restaurants calling the cops on Skillet, the silver-clad rolling kitchen that serves the food of the gods. First 13 Coins forced them to move their Wednesday South Lake Union spot. More recently, managers at the Elliott West Cafe uprooted them from their Friday Elliott Ave location. (That latter one especially hurts, as they used to be a 20-foot walk for us.) Legalities, schmegalities: It's totally bogus to involve the SPD in petty business disputes. 13 Coins and Elliott West? No more of our lunch money for you. Even if you start serving poutine. UPDATE: Now we've heard that it was the building management that called about Skillet (and the hapless hot dog cart that was there for a couple of Wednesdays). Regardless, the Elliott West Cafe staff are all very nice and are not the ones to blame. Unsurprisingly, however, some manager in this chain is being annoying and petty.

Great food, excellent beer and wine pours, delicious jazz, music, games, and sunset at Pier 66. What more would you want for a summer night?

We're pretty sure we've never watched the Kentucky Derby. Often dubbed "the most exciting two minutes in sports," the 134th(!) Run for the Roses takes place tomorrow at Churchill Downs (6:10 p.m. EDT, so 3:10 p.m. here). Not that it really matters, but Florida Derby winner Big Brown is the 3-1 favorite to win.

The Bottleneck Lounge, located at 23rd and Madison, has quickly become one of our favorite bars. Both the staff and the patrons are overwhelmingly friendly, and it's the kind of joint where you end up getting chatty with the bartender or the couple next to you, or where another customer might close out the night by buying a shot for everyone in the bar. Laid-back without being divey, the Bottleneck is just plain chill. We're not the only ones who have come to appreciate the Central District establishment. The bar just celebrated its one-year anniversary with a mention in the Seattle Times as one of the best happy hours in town.
