Finally, H&M, the Ikea of clothing stores, will make its glorious debut in Seattle. Our inside sources (H&M's myspace page) tell us that not one, not two, but three H&M stores are scheduled to open in Seattle this fall. Fans of affordable fashion will soon flock to new locations at 5250 520 Pike Street, University Village and Westfield Southcenter. We know, the lack of Eastside locations is shocking, but who knows? Perhaps they'll arrive......

Remember when The Crocodile Cafe closed unexpectedly in December? Remember how up in arms everyone got, yelling about how likely it was that yet more new condos would be the result? Well the future of The Crocodile Cafe wasn't known then and still isn't known now, according to the PI: Groupee Inc., a privately held Seattle-based Internet software company, has withdrawn its application for a restaurant and lounge license at the site, said Susan Reams,......

According to the Capitol Hill Blog, by way of Blogging Georgetown:There is a low power radio station over at SU on 12th Ave. It's on 89.1 Mhz, and is very low power. One can only get it within 1/4 mile from the campus, beyonf which some religious station blocks them out. The signal is strongest at 12th and Cherry. They claim to use 1330 khz also, but didin't have any luck there. The call letters......

Who knew? Seattlest tends to be slow on the uptake when it comes to going out on weeknights. We're the first to admit that, most of the time, we'd rather sit at home and watch reality television or satisfy our unhealthy workaholism well into the late night hours. Weekends are for going out....but, last night, in a rare fit of early-week fun-having, we rounded up as many of our favorite girlfriends as we could,......

We spend a lot of time at the Seattlest newsroom talking about the problems bicycle riders in this city have and how the city should make it easier for us since we reduce congestion and emissions at the same time. Now we realize we’ve been ignoring the good our our two-wheeled motorized brethren (and sistern) on scooters. According to the PI, Vince Rowley and Eric Pravitz are regular scooter riders who want the City Council......

We here at Seattlest like to provide our readers with valuable advice when we think it’s necessary. Two blog posts we’ve seen today make us think it’s important to advise that you stay the hell away from Denver. First, according to the New York Times blog The Lede, in November, the city’s voters passed a law similar to Seattle’s that makes pot the city’s "lowest law-enforcement priority." Well, it seems that the cops in Denver......

First it was severed feet washing ashore, now it is empty bottles of rat poison. The bottles, which have thus far been empty, have been washing up on Washington shores since last fall. That spring trip to the coast is sounding less appealing every day. The Department of Ecology warns people to stay away from any silver one-liter canisters with red or white caps, that are found on the beach. (No word on what to......

Woot! Slowly, but surely this Seattlest is starting to see some semblance of equal rights for ourselves and others like us, as a bill has passed the state legislature granting us over 100 more rights. Chris Gregoire is expected to sign it, no problemo. Last year, we were awarded a handful of rather morose rights that mostly had to do with the death of a partner. Very important rights, mind you, but a little......

The Tacoma soldier who is accused of killing a fellow army couple and kidnapping their infant has been transferred to the custody of the United States Army. The Army will prosecute Specialist Ivette Gonzalez Davila for the murders of Army medics Timothy and Randi Miller, who were doused in acid after being shot. Davila was transferred yesterday from Pierce County Jail to the brig at Bangor's sub base. The Army is expected to charge......

Here's another chance to get out there and support the, cough, "dying" Seattle music scene. This is going to be a killer show for all you folky, country-loving, singer/songwriter-digging people out there. Jack Wilson and his band are kind of Townes Van Zandt-y folk-rock. Husbands Love Your Wives is lyrcis-driven country-pop....think Victoria Williams. And, Eric Miller is just a beautiful songwriter--kind of Dylan-meets-Jeff-Buckley. Gosh, sometimes we think it's kind of silly to describe music......

Maybe it's the recession like it was in the early 90s, but as a city, we're recycling more than ever before. Mayor Greg Nickels announced today that Seattle set a new city record for recycling rates in 2006, with 47.5 percent of the city's residential, commercial and self-haul waste heading to recycling bins instead of the landfills. That’s a good thing. Did you know that every single day, we send a mile-long train filled with......

This post is brought to you by, we believe, Seattlest's lone Hillary supporter or, as we like to refer to ourself, Hillpporter. If you travel around the tubes today, you might see all manner of photos of Hillary Clinton looking very happy, surrounded by oodles of confetti. That's because, last night, Hillary brought it, winning the primaries in Texas, Ohio, and Rhode Island. We kind of wanted to go watch the returns with all......

It seems every time we check a local news site, which is pretty regularly...okay hourly, there's a report of another malfunctioning ferry. According to our unscientific, educated guesstimate, The Washington State Ferry Service has only had a few days of normal running schedules in the past month. Today's affected ferry route: the Point Defiance/Tahlequa service. The Rhododendron--a 48-car-capacity ferry which serving the route from Vashon Island--is suffering from mechanical problems. The boat will be......

Do not be surprised to see a $1 suggested donation for tap water on your restaurant bill if you dine out from March 16 to March 22. During this week in March, restaurants around the nation will ask patrons to donate the price of their tap water to support UNICEF’s Tap Project, which provides clean drinking water for children in need. One dollar affords 40 days of clean drinking water for a child –......

Washington lumber giant Weyerhaeuser and California's Chevron Oil and Gas Company have announced a partnership to develop a new bio-fuel. The planned fuel would be created out of wood fiber--something we imagine Weyerhaeuser has plenty of. The 50-50 partnership was announced on Friday afternoon in a joint statement. The venture has been named "Catchlight Energy." The new company will use staff and resources from Weyerhaeuser's Federal Way office and a number of Chevron's plants.......

We're not sure if Metro planned to give us an extra day of the old fares by scheduling the new ones to take affect tomorrow (the day after Leap Day), but we sure do appreciate it. Either way, please remember that as of tomorrow off-peak fares will be $1.50 and peak fares will be $1.75. Youth and seniors will keep paying what they've been paying until July, by the way. As a part of our......

Sixty University of Washington professors have signed an open letter discussing the trend of unprepared students. Science and Math teachers at the UW have noticed a rising number of their incoming students can't do basic math. Some instructors claim they've had to dumb down their classes because of the increasing lack of math skills. Professor Cliff Mass, from the Atmospheric Science Department, gathered the signatures. He was inspired to write the letter because of......

The teens, a 15 year old female student from Mercer Island High School and a 16 year old boy from Renton. The arrests were made around noon on Wednesday. "Bellevue from the North" by Alan Cordova, a Seattlest Flickr Contributor Our neighbors across the lake, have come up with a unique way to deal with tree root systems buckling sidewalks and city streets. Starting Thursday, The City of Bellevue will begin installing rubber sidewalks in areas where tree roots have destroyed traditional concrete walkways. The first rubber sidewalks will be installed along a half block stretch of Bellevue's NE 10th St., just north......
