Can't Miss It: Wednesday

PROJECTS ON THE SIDE: Maynard James Keenan (Tool, A Perfect Circle) is touring the Western U.S. with his latest side project Puscifer. He released albums under the Puscifer moniker in 2007 and 2008 but this is the first time he's taking the act on the road since debuting it in Las Vegas in February. Sweethead, the new project of Queens of the Stone Age guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen is the opener. Our review will be up shortly.

DEAD ALIVE: Touted as "The Goriest Fright Film of All Time," Dead Alive (aka Braindead) will be playing tonight at Central Cinema. And yes, they will be featuring Peter Jackson's director's cut with the full lawnmower scene. The plot sounds fantastic--a woman is bitten by a Sumatran rat-monkey, dies, and comes back to life to kill and eat DOGS, among other living creatures. It doesn't get much more awesome than that.

A PLAY OF MAGICAL THINKING: Intiman Theatre presents The Year of Magical Thinking, a play by well-known and much-loved author Joan Didion, based on her bestselling memoir of the same name. Directed by Sama Lapine and starring Judith Roberts, this beautiful show relives the heartbreaking aftermath of Didion losing her husband of 40 years while her daughter lay in intensive care, and how she coped with her grief.

ELECTRONIC LOVE: Washington D.C.-based d.j. duo Thievery Corporation will be coming to the Paramount for one night only. Known for their "acid jazz" cocktail lounge sound and progressive worldly beats, they are definitely one of those groups you may think you've never heard, but once you've listened to, you'll recognize. One of their most popular songs, "Lebanese Blonde", became a hit after it appeared in a little but well-known movie, Garden State, and it is used frequently in intros on radio stations such as KEXP and NPR. We guarantee this to be great for a date night, and hopefully some movin' and shakin'.

Gay Bars Threatened With Ricin Attacks

Yesterday, eleven gay bars on Capitol Hill (and one alt weekly, The Stranger) were sent anonymous letters containing threat of poisonous gas attacks. The bars listed as targets in the letters are the Elite, Neighbours, Wild Rose, the Cuff, Purr, the Eagle, R Place, Re-bar, CC's, Madison Pub, and the Crescent. The Times reports that Dan Savage thinks it might be "an embittered gay person" rather than a religious fanatic, as the letter contains no religious language or references. Either way, it's an unimaginative, hateful move on Anonymous' part, and we hope they either 'fess up or are caught promptly and brought to justice. Slog has word that there may be an organized pub crawl around the Hill on Friday night to show support for the bars; meanwhile, bartenders are asking patrons to be careful and not to leave their drinks unattended.

Seattle Public Schools just declared a snow day--no joke--and there is a "winter weather advisory" out for our area, says the National Weather Service. Seattlest will, of course, be going to work. We're that dedicated, but we are still keeping our fingers crossed that the boss will send everyone straight back home. That has everything to do with dangerous snow and nothing to do with the Re-Bar stamp on our right wrist from last night, by the way.

as a prime example of the sort of show artists should be putting their efforts into.

Ryan Dobosh lived in Seattle from 1989--2002, before moving to Los Angeles. He is in town this week and has some thoughts about his old home.

The show runs every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. through May 10 at Re-Bar.
