The California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8--which bans legal recognition of same-sex marriages--yesterday, sparking a wave of protests across the country. Here in Seattle, a "Day of Decision" rally was held downtown at Westlake Center. The Stranger reports State Senator Ed Murray was ambivalent about attending, saying, "so few people are willing to get off their butts to do something about marriage equality here, in the state where they themselves live." But of course he showed, along with Rep. Jamie Pedersen (photo) and a host of others. Hundreds of people crowded Westlake, and afterwards a smaller number took the chance to march up to Cal Anderson Park on Capitol Hill. 'CAUSE HATE IS JUST UGLY: The California Supreme Court announced last Friday that they would be handing down their decision today on the constitutionality of the infamous Prop 8. The court upheld the same-sex marriage ban, but allowed the existing 18,000 unions to stand. Since the news is mixed, it's fitting that there's a rally and/or protest taking place at Westlake Center Park tonight. Get out and show your support either way.

Seattlest didn't make it personally to the rally at the University of Washington, but our beautiful and talented sister Anna did, and she's texting us madly with updates and photos. She estimates 200 in attendance to protest John Fay's article in the Daily.

Seattlest's college didn't really have "protests," per se, so we're considering heading down to the UW campus on our lunch break to catch some of the student-organized rally to ask The Man for "LGBT training with The Daily staff and for a more inclusive campus community." Why is everyone so worked up? Read both the original pro-Prop 8 article by John Fay and our guest editorial, a response to Fay's article by Chris Kaasa; then, meet up with everyone outside the Husky Union Building at 12:30. Bra-burning optional.

Pity poor Pluto. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union reclassified the celestial body as a dwarf planet. Along with being totally emasculating, the IAU's declaration meant that Pluto was stripped of its rights as a full-fledged planet, including health insurance (medical, vision, and dental), a sweet parking space, and a Platinum American Express card. Well, now Pluto is fighting back, or at least it's found a group to take up the cause:
