We saw Garfield High ninth-grade basketball phenom Tony Wroten make the most incredible dunk last Tuesday, but as we'd been assured by a KING 5 cameraman that they'd caught it on tape, we didn't want to waste words describing it. Check out this video. The dunk comes about halfway through. That video doesn't quite do the play justice, the camera loses track of Wroten at the last second--probably because everyone in the gym jumped to......

We all know what happens to kids who attend private school. Their folks buy them 16 years of education, they get a job at Daddy's firm, and eventually they sit in board rooms and devise ways to increase profits--usually by laying off kids who went to public school. The forward-thinking youth at private Kennedy High don't want the hopeless, powerless lives of their public school lessers to come as a shock, so they are preparing......

Counterpoint at Tuesday night's Garfield/Inglemoor game, played at Garfield's temporary home, Old Lincoln High. At the P.A., a white man with a white beard in a black sportcoat with a voice like a KING-FM DJ. Think James Lipton. Behind us, a black woman with a Garfield purple track jacket that said "Class of '77", with a voice like an airhorn. Think Wanda Sykes. Lipton: "Welcome to Garfield's gym..well, ersatz Garfield." Sykes: "This ain't the gym,......

If you're wondering what happens to the lesser-known bands who used to play Seattle at the Croc, evidence from the sports world shows that you ought to look for them in Kent. Or not at all. As you read, those Seattlests who do follow music weren't too concerned about losing the Croc. Neumos and Chop Suey are the places to go--they book well-known bands (well-known to music types, at least). The Croc booked lesser-known bands,......

"Play smart," came the exhortation from Blanchet parents, as their children began to fritter away a lead that had been 13 points with three minutes left. But let's face it, people--asking high school basketball players to "play smart" is like asking high school musicians to "maintain your vibrato" or high school cheerleaders to "save it for marriage." So, on our Metro League Tuesday (TM), through a series of ill-advised drives, poor passes, bad fouls and,......

After seeing him for the first time last night, Tony Wroten, Garfield's 6-4 9th-grade point guard prodigy, just vaulted to the top of our list of the best things about living in Seattle. You will pay $8 to see Wroten play in some musty high school gym at some point in the next four years, and he will make a pass or a juke or a slam dunk that will make you turn to the......

Bill Resler, beloved coach of the Roosevelt High School girls basketball team, which was featured in the documentary Heart of the Game, was fired on the eve of the season, reports the Times' Craig Smith. Roosevelt administrators aren't saying why, at least not publicly. Privately, according to Resler, they're telling parents he held forbidden offseason practices, which Resler denies. Smith cites previous complaints against Resler that he encourages rough play and sometimes swears. Those haven't......

On Friday, Issaquah High pulled off its second earth-shattering upset of the year, defeating Bellevue High's nationally-ranked football team. What makes this such a big upset?
