From Below Rogue Corn Devours

Is the Emerald City turning into Kansas? Drought in Seattle has produced some strange phenomena, including this cornstalk growing out of a gutter in Montlake.

Seattle, Home of World-Changing NIMBY Graffiti Artists

"Queers Against Gentrification," spotted by the lovely and talented Katelyn Hackett on Capitol Hill "right across from the light rail construction site, John and...10th, I guess." ACT UP! indeed.

Fairy Phone Call" by Sean Glenn, from the Seattlest Flickr Pool

Local blogger Shane Becker has a hilarious/infuriating post up about his experience being detained by police while shopping at REI's flagship store. While waiting in a customer service line, Becker says he saw two Loomis guys working on an ATM. Never having seen the inside of an ATM, he walked over and snapped a picture with his iPhone. After Becker refused to show his ID for taking the photo, things went very wrong, with a Loomis guy offering to tackle him if he tried to leave, REI loss prevention officers showing up, and eventually the SPD, who put him in cuffs and detained him for half an hour at the West Precinct. Becker, who one suspects was writing his blog post in his head the whole time, ends with a list of just a few snapshots of the insides of ATMs you can find on the internet. We'll close with the Photographer's Bill of Rights.

Almost three years ago, we walked around Lake Union for your entertainment. That seemed like it took all day, so this time we rode our bike. Much quicker!

Way to go, sun!

PETA Sea Kittens Expire on Pike Street

PETA is concerned that fish aren't lovable enough for people to stop eating them, so they have cooked up the "sea kitten" campaign to reframe the argument for vegetarianism. Today a group of them were downtown raising consciousnesses--primarily that of males with camera phones, we're going to guess. We don't particularly care for fish sticks, but if they plan on messing with the tuna on our salade niçoise, we have a problem.

You never know what you'll find in our Seattlest Flickr pool--here we have startling evidence of the untapped ability to double 520's capacity overnight. Seeing is believing.

We had a few minutes free this sunny Presidents Day afternoon, so we hopped on our bike and visited Volunteer Park, which as always was full of people with different afternoons in mind.

Seattlest Poll: How Unchurchy Are We?

Walking down Broadway, we smiled at the thought of these boots as evidence of some Raptured soul, but then wondered if, really, a pair of boots here and there is all we might see anyway. Odds seem pretty good.

Washington Is Beautiful Webcam Country

We were just...okay, goofing off best describes it...visiting this mountain and river webcam site when we came across this view from Hurricane Ridge. Hard to believe it's from a webcam. Gorgeous.

Neighborhood News And Local Blog Round-Up

  • Looks like the Rainier Valley Post has classifieds, now. We love seeing all the ways neighborhood blogs are connecting people to those around them, and introducing classifieds as a way of communicating about local resources is kind of brilliant in a year when jobs promise to be scarce and money scarcer.
  • Seattlest MvB and CHSer JSeattle collaborated last night to bring you breaking (hah!) news about a fallen branch on a 15th Avenue power line. Photo included, for which we hear MvB sold the rights at $3, down from an initial bargaining price of $10,000.Capitol Hill wasn't the only neighborhood having problems with power. West Seattle Blog reports an overnight storm-related power outage about seven hours long at their HQ. Good thing they had stockpiled MacBook batteries!
  • Irate commenters will be glad to hear that the City of Seattle jumped to use salt on the city's streets during the snowstorm last night. Seattle 911 has the details.

This one's titled simply "The Look." Seattlest's Flickr pool has no shortage of festive photos and snowbound scenery. But let's take a moment to consider the reason for the season: Because if we weren't so busy celebrating we'd be too grouchy to live with. Check out Seattleye's large, suitable for framing version here. Our posting will be light the next few days. Have a safe and happy holidays everyone.

People like to flaunt their provincial superiority and yammer on about bad Seattle drivers especially in weather like this. (We're looking at you, fellow transplants and ex-pats.) Yeah, whatever. Screw you jerks.

We've been told we need to have a line of copy here for the gallery to display correctly.

We don't think we could possibly be any more enamored with a photo than we are with this beauty. It looks like a misplaced masterpiece you'd find at an antique store, buried beneath piles of unwanted snapshots. Please keep uploading your gems to the Seattlest Flickr Pool, and we will remain in constant awe of you all...and of this beautiful city we are lucky enough to call home.

Aw, thanks, Redhook. We really appreciate the sentiment. Now, if you could help the Seahawks or the Huskies start winning, we'd be even more grateful. Don't forget to add your lovely sentiments and photos to the Seattlest Flickr Pool.

If you weren't glued to the Women's Event Finals in the Floor Exercise at the Olympics tonight like we were, you might have seen a pretty cool lightning storm in the sky to the East of the city. Thankfully our windows lit up so we caught it.
