Seattle Embraces a Well- Dressed President

A new weekend post from our new fashion correspondent, Cameron Levin. But before we get to the fashion talk, she's also got the lowdown on some time-sensitive designer retailer events for you:
  • Polite Society Trunk Show with acclaimed Russian talent, Madina Vadache, featuring her spring/summer couture collection on Thursday, January 29th, 6-8pm. Vadache will be there for personal consultations and custom fittings. RSVP by January 27th to info@shoppolitesociety.com or by calling 206-441-4796.
  • Karan Dannenberg 70% off storewide sale, January 25-31
  • Butch Blum Winter Sale, 50% storewide sale

We had no idea Seattle Metropolitan even had blogs, but they do, and the fashion one (the first one we clicked on) by Laura Cassidy is fun. Cassidy was not enamored with Michelle Obama's white ball gown but really dug her lemongrass suit. Seattle Weekly's new music editor, Jonathan Cunningham, introduced himself over at Reverb ("I'm not a hipster. I pull no punches"). Over at Sound Politics, Stefan Sharkansky is freaking out about mail-in ballot signature verification. And the great debate about school closures continues, respectfully, at Crosscut: they've published the School Board's rebuttal of Dick Lilly's argument that the SPS shouldn't close any schools at all.

Throughout the campaign we have been gathering the top political writers in the country, and asking them to discuss the presidential race. Today they discuss the Democratic National Convention.

Courtesy of local politics blogger extraordinaire Goldy at HorsesAss comes a YouTube video of the Washington delegates at the DNC when Michelle Obama takes the stage. We knew we weren't the only person who got teary or swelled up with pride during the speech, and it looks like Governor Gregoire was excited from the get-go...listen to that hooting and hollering!

One day down and three more to go here in Denver at the Democratic National Convention. Below are some of the top moments of Day 1 for DCist (and a couple lowlights for good measure).

Those who can't wait for Husky basketball season, so they can heckle Oregon State, might want to tune in to tonight’s Democratic Convention. The Beaver’s new men’s basketball coach, Craig Robinson, will be taking the stage to address those gathered in Denver.

If you're not, you better get ready. Michelle Obama, the future First Lady of the United States, will be joining Washington Governor Christine Gregoire onstage for a fundraising event in July. Somehow this fundraising event is free—seems like flawed logic to us—and open to the public. It will take place on July 17th at WaMu Theatre at Qwest Field from noon to 3 p.m.

dogs.

  • With a week full of record low temperatures, Seattlest wondered if we'd ever see the sun again, and so did guest-blogger Ryan Dobosh.
  • Bostonist laid the smack down on two dumbass students who videotaped their neighbors getting it on, then shared the video online.
  • Gothamist found that taking photographs at Coney Island can mean, at least for one photographer, that the police and other people can force you to hand over your film, or "things are going to get much worse for you."
  • Shanghaiist learned how to pronounce "Beijing," host city of the upcoming Olympics.
  • DCist experienced a difficult and sad Friday the 13th with a massive power outage and the sudden death of Washington media legend Tim Russert.
  • Chicagoist saw Republicans target (future First Lady?) Michelle Obama.
  • Phillyist was up in arms against breed-specific legislation, which, if passed could see loving family pets confiscated or even euthanized, just because of their breed.
  • Londonist reminisced over their long obsession with funky footwear, then celebrated the release of Adidas London trainers.
  • As our friend pointed out, between the weather, the Mariners, and The Love Guru, 2008 could go down as the worst summer in history.
