Jarrod Washburn's up-and-down Mariner career is over; Jack Zduriencik traded him to Detroit this morning for two young lefthanded starting pitchers. The M's get 23-year-old Luke French, who's split time between AAA and the majors this season, and 20-year-old Mauricio Robles, who's pitching in A ball. Neither was listed among the Tigers' top-ten prospects coming into this season.

The M's win 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth on Ichiro's two-out walk-off single -- Ich's 148th hit of the season, which puts him exactly at the pace of his record-setting 262-hit season in 2004. Washburn allowed just 1 run in 7 IP in what may have been his last start as a Mariner, but didn't get the win due to a bullpen collapse. M's 52-48, 7.5 GB. Box score. Next game Weds. vs. TOR, 1:40 p.m.; Rowland-Smith vs. Halladay.
Another day, another masterful pitching performance by the M's, this one from Jarrod Washburn (7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER). The bullpen just barely held on to the lead to get Washburn his eighth win of the year. Mike Sweeney, in his first start since coming off the DL, had two hits including a first-inning RBI double that gave the M's the lead. M's 51-44, 5.5 GB. Box score. Next game Friday vs. CLE, 7:10 p.m.; Rowland-Smith vs. Laffey.
What team can get thoroughly outclassed, yet consider their game a success? The Sounders, if they draw 65,000 fans to Qwest Field -- most of them in Sounders green -- for a game against international powerhouse Chelsea FC.
Jarrod Washburn pitched the best game of his life, recording the 10th one-hitter in Mariner history. Adding to the fun -- his folks were in town for the game! Washburn retired 27 of the 28 batters he faced; only a fourth-inning line-drive single by Nick Markakis kept the game from being perfect. Russell Branyan's first-inning solo homer turned out to be all the offense Wash needed. M's 43-39, 3.5 GB. Box score. Next game Tues. vs. BAL, 7:10 p.m.; Bedard vs. Guthrie.
Erik Bedard returns to the Mariners rotation on Tuesday, having missed the last month with a sore shoulder (according to team doctors--some of our Mariner fan friends contend that the oft-injured Bedard has a sore part of the female anatomy.) Bedard's return takes up a spot in the five-man starting rotation, meaning somebody's headed to the bullpen or, worse yet, back to traveling coach class with the AAA Tacoma Rainiers. Ew.
A-Rod's second homer in as many nights sinks the Good Ship Mariner, as Andy Pettitte outduels Jarrod Washburn. Half of the M's offense was a solo homer by Griffey, his first in New Yankee Stadium. That's 44 major league parks Junior's homered in, one short of Sammy Sosa's record. M's 39-38, 3.5 GB. Box score. Next game Thu @ NYY, 4:05 p.m.; Vargas vs. Sabathia.
The M's finished the homestand with their highest-scoring game in two months. Ichiro started it off with a leadoff homer, Rob Johnson had a three-run double, and the M's chased Padres starter Wade LeBlanc by the 2nd. Jarrod Washburn pitched six strong innings to get his fourth win of the year. M's 37-35, 2 GB. Box score. Next game Friday @ L.A. Dodgers, 7:10 p.m.; Vargas vs. Kershaw.
One of Ken Griffey Jr.'s most dramatic homers -- a pinch-hit, two-run blast to right-center on a 97 mph Tony Pena fastball -- tied this game in the eighth inning, and sent an already standing crowd into hysterics. (Who says Griffey can't get around on a heater?) After recent callup Chris Woodward singled and stole second, Rob Johnson tripled him home to put the M's ahead. Batista gets the win, though Washburn deserved it after throwing 7 innings of 3-hit ball. Aardsma struck out the side in the ninth for his 13th save. M's 33-34, 4.5 GB. Box score. Next game Sat. vs. ARI, 7:10 p.m.; Vargas vs. Buckner.
Pitchers have an expanded job description in the National League, and Rockies' starter Ubaldo Jimenez not only outpitched Jarrod Washburn, he outhit and outfielded him too. A Washburn error led to one Rockies' run, and a Jimenez single drove another in. (Washburn, on the other hand, botched several bunt attempts, and wasn't able to move runners over in any of his at bats). M's 30-31, 5.5 GB. Box score. Next game Sat @ COL, 5:10 p.m.; Morrow (in place of Bedard, who has a sore shoulder) vs. Marquis.
Playing as the "Marineros" on "Salute to Latin American Baseball Day," the M's had their own "Salute to Elderly Ballplayers." Ichiro drove in the first run and scored the other on a Griffey opposite-field double. Jarrod Washburn allowed just one run in six innings, but Chris Jakubauskas poached the win in relief, his fourth (Wash only has three wins). Box score. Next game Sun. vs. MIN, 1:10 p.m.; Bedard vs. Kevin Slowey.
Erik Bedard and Adrian Beltre will probably be traded by July 31. Hopefully, Jarrod Washburn will go as well. They don’t even have to trade him; they can just leave him behind the counter at a Panda Express, or pretend to throw a tennis ball and drive off when he tries to find it.

After Felix Hernandez' terrible eight-inning reign, the A's won't be contesting Jarrod Washburn's accession to the mound. What a performance--the best in Mariner opening day history, and one of the best in opening day history period.
Jeff Weaver had a terrible 2006, but then had a couple of good games in the postseason and earned himself a contract for next year. Sound familiar?
One commenter greeted our proposition that the Mariners could make the postseason next year so derisively, we were forced to do some extra research just to make sure we weren't going nuts.
Vladimir Guerrero, who hits a baseball harder than anyone we've ever seen, laced a line drive off of Mariners pitcher Rafael Soriano's skull in the 8th inning of last night's 6-4 Mariner win. Greg Bishop of the Times on Soriano's condition:
Forget gay marriage. The greatest threat to that holiest of institutions is Mariner manager Mike Hargrove. His idiotic bullpen management this weekend, summed up in this post at USS Mariner, caused at least one marital breach we know of. There must be others. Says a USS Mariner commenter:
Yes, the M's won yesterday, pulling within 3.5 games of first-place Oakland. But not without another startling managerial gaffe. With runners on the corners, and two outs in the Dodgers fourth, Hargrove had Joel Pineiro pitch to the #8 hitter instead of walking him to get to the pitcher. Of course, the #8 hitter singled, driving in a run, and even Dave Niehaus, who is rarely critical, lamented "I don't understand why you don't walk that guy!" Neither do we, Dave.
Eddie Guardado didn't cotton to being removed as Mariner closer, the P-I reports today. Apparently he's been sulking, and Jamie Moyer coralled him for a private chat over the weekend. The mano-a-mano preceded a successful inning against Los Angeles. Everyday Eddie thinks it was a turning point.
The Mariners roster is almost set. Jose Lopez won the second base job, as expected. Longshot bench aspirant Roberto Petagine made the team with a hot spring.
