UW grad Hope Solo held the high-powered Brazilian offense scoreless in the Beijing Olympics gold medal soccer game and led the US squad to its third gold medal in four tries. The evenly-matched contest was scoreless at the end of regulation, with Carli Lloyd putting the Americans ahead 1-0 in the first extra time period and giving the US the lead for good with a crossing shot from the edge of the box. Gig Harbor's Stephanie (Lopez) Cox also featured on the gold-medal winning squad.
Thieves suspected of stealing hundreds of gallons of premium fuel from stations in West Seattle and Sea-Tac have struck again. The latest incident in a rash of high volume gas thefts occurred last Thursday, when 208 gallons were stolen from a Gig Harbor Shell station. Police believe the same men were caught on tape last month, pilfering fuel from four Shell gas stations in King County.
How do we know? Amazon.com's running a contest. If your town pre-orders more copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows per capita than any other, Amazon will donate $5000 (via Amazon gift certificate) to a local charitable organization.
In an article headlined "Local track doomed by local ignorance" on the front page of Sunday's sports section Jerry Brewer argues that the rubes in Seattle wouldn't know a good opportunity if it drove over them at 150mph. Actually, he points to a handful of distinct examples of our local ignorance. He points to comments by Frank Chopp in which the House Speaker from Seattle cites a non-existent DUI charge against Richard Petty and he points to comments by Larry Seaquist, D of Gig Harbor, in which Seaquist disparages all of NASCAR fandom and likely 80% of the country by stating, "These are not the kind of people you would want living next door to you. They'd be the ones with the junky cars in the front yard and would try to slip around the law." Brewer's right on this count--these statements are terrible.

Clarence Trent (at right, via Scout.com) is unstoppable in the high post. This is not the only reason that Gig Harbor is destined for a deep run in the state 4A tourney. There's also their skilled post men, Ryan Stanley and Mathias Ward, and a dangerous long-range shooter, Geoff McIntire. But, mostly, it's because Clarence Trent is unstoppable in the high post.
Seattlest was admittedly skeptical about fiber arts. It sounds a little Metamucil. Then we saw On Mapping: New Perspectives with a Common Thread, now up at Bellevue Arts Museum.
After a weekend of pulling our hair out and screaming "why" upwards over various human and environmental tragedies in the Gulf of Mexico, we were greeted with a number of teacup tempests in our own backyard this morning. Cleanup following the Gig Harbor fire of last week is moving forward with contractors said to be removing 3-4 boats (charred hulls) from the water daily. According to the Coast Guard, a worse environmental situation was averted because the city recently purchased 600 feet of oil containment boom goodness. Three cheers for preparedness.
There's something about a good marina fire that gets Seattlest's attention like few massive insurance calamities can. This morning we were awakened by our crack team of Down South correspondants with the news that Harborview Marina in Gig Harbor was being consumed by fire.
A raucous good time was had by all at the Starbucks shareholder meeting yesterday as founder Howard Schultz tore into analysts for expecting too much of the company. Hahaha! Starbucks stock lost 9.4% of its value recently after analysts' January growth expectations were missed, even though the company's own forecasts were met. Hahaha!
