When Seattlest was just a wee lesbian growing up in a small southern town, we did what we reckon other wee small-town lesbians did: we listened to a lot of k.d. lang and the Indigo Girls. We went on long road trips across the whole state with the windows down, our other closeted friends with us, singing "Galileo" at the top of our lungs. Ah, those good ol' days of closeted small-town life.
There are quite a few things going on for the gays today, this week, and for the next month or so.
That giant snapping sound you heard this week was the gay and lesbian community splitting in two over the proper way to celebrate Pride Weekend in Seattle. On the one hand the festivities, particularly the Running of the Gays, have gotten too large for Capitol Hill. We have a sense that the phrase "too many straight people" belongs in that last sentence somewhere. On the other hand, there’s a strong feeling that the proper place for Pride events is the Hill and only the Hill. What to do, what to do...
We'd like to alert you to a couple gay-centric blogs out there, and no, we're not talking about the Slog. Seattlest has long considered the Queen City Cruise News' blog to be the authoritative faggy blog in the city and we're sure that they'll continue their great work, but yesterday they posted on the launching of a Seattle Gay News affiliated blog. Our soggy little heart warms just a few degrees every time we see a print pub launch themselves into bloggy space (don't expect a print version of Seattlest anytime soon, though) and we have high hopes that the SGN guys will iron out a few HTML kinks and help keep us appraised as to the whereabouts and goings-on of the gays far into the future. Welcome to the neighborhood - Expect us to come knocking with a welcome basket any time now.
Well, it's been announced. Gay Pride, one of the Hill's too few moments in the spotlight, has gotten too big for its stylish b(r)itches and will be held at Seattle Center next year. This decision will surely solve the problem of it being too large - We predict dueling Prides for 2006. There will be the official Seattle Center version which will draw a couple thousand squares, heteros and family-types and then there will be the Capitol Hill version which will rage on as its gay old self. Neither will approach the massive crush of humanity of last summer's celebration, but hopefully the intensity can be maintained in at least one location. All that extra leg room at the Seattle Center will not be needed, of course, because people go to Pride because of the charm of Capitol Hill, not despite its shortcomings. Not unexpectedly, Capitol Hill businesses haven't been pleased to hear that the event will be moving.
