Remember when The Crocodile Cafe closed unexpectedly in December? Remember how up in arms everyone got, yelling about how likely it was that yet more new condos would be the result? Well the future of The Crocodile Cafe wasn't known then and still isn't known now, according to the PI: Groupee Inc., a privately held Seattle-based Internet software company, has withdrawn its application for a restaurant and lounge license at the site, said Susan Reams,......

We spend a lot of time at the Seattlest newsroom talking about the problems bicycle riders in this city have and how the city should make it easier for us since we reduce congestion and emissions at the same time. Now we realize we’ve been ignoring the good our our two-wheeled motorized brethren (and sistern) on scooters. According to the PI, Vince Rowley and Eric Pravitz are regular scooter riders who want the City Council......

We here at Seattlest like to provide our readers with valuable advice when we think it’s necessary. Two blog posts we’ve seen today make us think it’s important to advise that you stay the hell away from Denver. First, according to the New York Times blog The Lede, in November, the city’s voters passed a law similar to Seattle’s that makes pot the city’s "lowest law-enforcement priority." Well, it seems that the cops in Denver......

First it was severed feet washing ashore, now it is empty bottles of rat poison. The bottles, which have thus far been empty, have been washing up on Washington shores since last fall. That spring trip to the coast is sounding less appealing every day. The Department of Ecology warns people to stay away from any silver one-liter canisters with red or white caps, that are found on the beach. (No word on what to......

Maybe it's the recession like it was in the early 90s, but as a city, we're recycling more than ever before. Mayor Greg Nickels announced today that Seattle set a new city record for recycling rates in 2006, with 47.5 percent of the city's residential, commercial and self-haul waste heading to recycling bins instead of the landfills. That’s a good thing. Did you know that every single day, we send a mile-long train filled with......

This post is brought to you by, we believe, Seattlest's lone Hillary supporter or, as we like to refer to ourself, Hillpporter. If you travel around the tubes today, you might see all manner of photos of Hillary Clinton looking very happy, surrounded by oodles of confetti. That's because, last night, Hillary brought it, winning the primaries in Texas, Ohio, and Rhode Island. We kind of wanted to go watch the returns with all......

Washington lumber giant Weyerhaeuser and California's Chevron Oil and Gas Company have announced a partnership to develop a new bio-fuel. The planned fuel would be created out of wood fiber--something we imagine Weyerhaeuser has plenty of. The 50-50 partnership was announced on Friday afternoon in a joint statement. The venture has been named "Catchlight Energy." The new company will use staff and resources from Weyerhaeuser's Federal Way office and a number of Chevron's plants.......

We're not sure if Metro planned to give us an extra day of the old fares by scheduling the new ones to take affect tomorrow (the day after Leap Day), but we sure do appreciate it. Either way, please remember that as of tomorrow off-peak fares will be $1.50 and peak fares will be $1.75. Youth and seniors will keep paying what they've been paying until July, by the way. As a part of our......

Sixty University of Washington professors have signed an open letter discussing the trend of unprepared students. Science and Math teachers at the UW have noticed a rising number of their incoming students can't do basic math. Some instructors claim they've had to dumb down their classes because of the increasing lack of math skills. Professor Cliff Mass, from the Atmospheric Science Department, gathered the signatures. He was inspired to write the letter because of......

The teens, a 15 year old female student from Mercer Island High School and a 16 year old boy from Renton. The arrests were made around noon on Wednesday. When we used to work at the Starbucks in the Bank of America building (nee: Columbia Center), one of our duties was to bring up boxes of cups, napkins and other sundries from the storeroom located in the garage on level E, five stories below ground. According to one urban legend in the building, the lowest level of the parking garage was supposed to be the safest place to be in downtown Seattle during an......

Real Change is setting up camp at City Hall, to protest the city's handling of homelessness and new policies regarding homeless encampments. The planned protest is scheduled for March 13th, with Real Change encouraging supporters to "bring a tent and a friend" down to City Hall. The protest has been spawned by a proposed city protocol, which would force people living in "illegal encampments" to vacate and find somewhere else to live within 48......

No, Seattlest is not just a fan of alliteration and 80's slang, as the headline might suggest. Burying the beef, is the current plan of the Seattle Public School District to rid itself of 230 cases of possibly contaminated beef. The beef, provided to school districts through a USDA lunch program, came from a California slaughterhouse in the center of the largest beef recall in USDA history. Nearly two-thirds of the school districts in......

Popular Science released its list of the 50 Greenest cities in the U.S. recently. Of course, liberal, green Seattle was on it. We came in eighth. It surprised no one at Seattlest HQ, however, that our neighbor to the South, namely Portland, came in first since some of us believe that Portland is better and we all love PDX regardless. A hundred or so people met at Cal Anderson Park on Capitol Hill last night, to serenade the full lunar eclipse with Bonnie Tyler's '80s classic, "Total Eclipse of the Heart." Archie McPhee's latest bumper stickers, posted in Seattlest's Flickr Pool Ballard residents, tired of seeing their local landmarks and homes swallowed by condos and "multi-use buildings," have taken a stand on one beloved icon of "Old Ballard." Sometimes this Seattlest is a bit behind the news, so an e-mail we just got from a friend who works in Fremont let us in on the fact that the Fremont Sonic Boom is closing and selling its CDs. 30% off new ones and 50% off used. The early bird gets the worm. Nice guys finish last. And, apparently, the pirates get the bikini babes. We've seen them drive around town for weeks in their big pirate ship/truck thing. It always takes us by surprise, and we always look at it as the first indication that SeaFair's coming. Four years in this town, and we still don't know when that celebration happens, and we still don't know what for. But so......
