The Mariners and Yankees have played some outstanding games here over the years; below we present part one of our top ten. Historic, surprising, violent, record-breaking--the list has it all. We're giving you #6-10 today, with the top five coming tomorrow

Mariners in Broadway Preview Mode

Saw Catch Me If You Can over the weekend, and it struck me that the 2009 Mariners are working in a similar way--auditioning players for roles on next season's team while still putting on a professional performance.

Toronto 11, Mariners 4

Now this is just getting ridiculous. The M's get blown out for the fourth consecutive game, this time with King Felix on the mound. Hernandez had his worst outing of the year, allowing 7 runs and 11 hits in 5.2 IP. A makeshift lineup -- with Branyan and Lopez both out with bad backs -- didn't record an extra base hit. Ichiro had 3 hits, raising his average to .363. M's 51-48, 7.5 GB. Box score. Next game Tues vs. TOR, 7:10 p.m.; Washburn vs. Rzepczynski.

Mariners 2, Detroit 1

The M's had two hits, but they only really needed one -- Russell Branyan's majestic two-out, two-run homer in the eighth. The homer was Branyan's 24th, tying him atop the AL leaderboard. The homer gave Felix Hernandez his 11th win. King Felix was dominating, striking out eight including two punchouts of MVP candidate Miguel Cabrera with runners on. M's 50-44, 5.5 GB. Box score. Next game Thu. @ DET, 10:05 a.m.; Washburn vs. French.

What team can get thoroughly outclassed, yet consider their game a success? The Sounders, if they draw 65,000 fans to Qwest Field -- most of them in Sounders green -- for a game against international powerhouse Chelsea FC.

The King is Here

Let’s say that you that you excelled at your job to the point where people mentioned you as one of the tops in your field. Also, let’s say that your co-workers kept messing up repeatedly to where it was costing you clients. Well then, you might sit like this after Doug from accounting screwed up your masterful PowerPoint presentation:

Mariners 3, Texas 1

Franklin Gutierrez' three-run eighth inning homer gives the M's game one of a crucial four-game series vs. division leading Texas. King Felix kept the M's in the game while the offense sputtered, going eight innings to get the win. His next appearance will be in Tuesday's All-Star Game. M's 44-41, 3.5 GB. Box score. Next game Fri vs. TEX, 7:10 p.m.; Morrow vs. Feldman.

You Be the Manager: Who Should M's Drop from Starting Rotation?

Erik Bedard returns to the Mariners rotation on Tuesday, having missed the last month with a sore shoulder (according to team doctors--some of our Mariner fan friends contend that the oft-injured Bedard has a sore part of the female anatomy.) Bedard's return takes up a spot in the five-man starting rotation, meaning somebody's headed to the bullpen or, worse yet, back to traveling coach class with the AAA Tacoma Rainiers. Ew.

No doubting it: The Seattle Mariners are legitimate pennant contenders. The Seattle Mariners are legitimate pennant contenders. THE SEATTLE MARINERS ARE LEGITIMATE PENNANT CONTENDERS!!! Sorry, we like writing that so much we had to do it thrice.

M's Serve Baseball's Best Team; Lose Beltre: The Mariners started their road trip with a surprising 2-1 series win over the Dodgers, who have baseball's best record. The highlight was Felix Hernandez's nine-K performance on Saturday night, with homers by Griffey and Branyan providing the offense. Bad news came that night as well: Adrian Beltre will miss 6-8 weeks, he's getting surgery to remove painful bone spurs in his shoulder.

Mariners 3, Arizona 2

D-Backs' 1B Tony Clark inexplicably dropped a routine throw to first with two outs in the ninth, giving the M's a walk-off win. Felix Hernandez kept the Mariners in this one, and held a 1-0 lead in the eighth inning before surrendering a two-run homer. The M's won with a lineup of mostly backups and AAA starters, as six regulars were unavailable due to injury or family illness. M's 35-34, 2.5 GB. Box score. Next game Tues. vs. SD, 7:10 p.m.; Olson vs. Gaudin.

Mariners 5, San Diego 0

King Felix was amazing, throwing a two-hitter for his third career shutout. Sure, it's San Diego, but this is still the major leagues, folks. Padres starter Kevin Correia wasn't much worse, allowing two hits over eight innings -- but those hits were homers, to Gooters and Beltre. The M's tacked on three more in the ninth, two on a Griffey single. M's 31-33, 5.5 GB. Box score. Next game Weds. @ SD, 7:05 p.m.; Olson vs. Gaudin.

Mariners 4, Baltimore 1

Huzzah for Venezuelans! Felix Hernandez, of the Valencia, Carabobo Hernandez's, throws seven innings, allowing just one run. Jose Lopez, of the Barcelona, Anzoátegui Lopez's, homers twice, driving in three. The win is Hernandez' sixth, the homers Lopez' seventh and eighth. Now if only Venezuela can pull out a win against Uruguay in World Cup qualifying! M's 29-30, 4.5 GB. Box score. Next game Thu. @ BAL, 4:05 p.m.; Olson vs. Uehara.

Tuesdays with Felix and Brandon

Tonight while Rush Limbaugh is busy writing cancer jokes, Northwest sports fans will be sitting in front of a television watching two of the regions most exciting players.

After Justin Verlander retires the first 12 Mariner hitters, the M's explode for five runs in the fifth to overcome a 3-0 Tigers lead. Well, not so much "explode," as they have two bunts in the inning, and score on an error and a wild pitch. Felix Hernandez fights through early struggles to get the win, and the bullpen provides three scoreless innings. Next game: Tomorrow vs. Detroit at 6:10 p.m. Erik Bedard vs. Edwin Jackson.

The way Bonnie Hunt tells it, the movie Dave started as a short film with her in the role of a White House tour guide. Then Kevin Kline dropped by the set, started riffing, and the whole project changed.

Our beloved boys of summer (?) return to the friendly confines of RoBro after a 3-3 road trip to Boston and Toronto, cementing them firmly in last place in the AL West—16.5 games behind the Angels.

Let's just say, for the sake of argument, that you perform badly at your job this year.

Two of baseball's best young pitchers face off tonight at the local baseball yard: It's two-time Cy Young award winning lefty Johan Santana of the Twins against the M's fireballing, barely legal righty, Felix Hernandez.

Got an email from a friend the other day: "My boss says he's officially back on the Mariners bandwagon."

Vitals: Kelvim Jose Escobar, 31 yo RHP. Born in La Guaira, Venezuela. 6-1, 230. 87-84, 4.20 career. 4-1, 2.21 in 2007. $9 million salary.

According to the Times some doctor man is going to poke around Felix Hernandez's elbow before this afternoon's game, and then talk to the media about what he found.

Little tip to the Mariners, the next time the jewel of your franchise leaves the game with an apparent injury don’t play some happy Van Morrison song about love. Instead, as our friend pointed out, you might want to play something more appropriate, like the Six Feet Under theme.

For our headline, we borrow the words of that magnificent artisan of the English language, Fox Sports Northwest's Brad Adam. Could anyone sum up Felix Hernandez' breathtaking, complete game shutout, no-hit-thru-seven-innings performance last night any better? Probably not, but let's take a look-see.

We'll suspend our usual format today because of the existence of this remarkable video. 18-year-old Matsuzaka baffling Ichiro in his prime is pretty much all you need to see.

After Felix Hernandez' terrible eight-inning reign, the A's won't be contesting Jarrod Washburn's accession to the mound. What a performance--the best in Mariner opening day history, and one of the best in opening day history period.

During the telecast of the Mariners' 6-2 win over Oakland last night, the TV cameras captured an activity we haven't seen much of in the Mariner dugout recently--laughter.

With his fifth-inning home run today, former Mariner Ken Griffey, Jr. left a couple of Yankee greats in his rear-view mirror.

The Mariners roster is almost set. Jose Lopez won the second base job, as expected. Longshot bench aspirant Roberto Petagine made the team with a hot spring.
