Online media is ready to eat its young, we see. Paul Constant, Glenn Nelson, and Chuck Taylor have reviews in on the new, online-only Seattle P-I and it's mostly thumbs down. Each of them seems to think the move to an online platform was a planned transition, and that there should have been some "reinvention" to wow everyone on Day One. Our sense was that thanks to Hearst's poker skills, no one at the P-I was sure until a few days ago that they even had jobs, let alone what they were. Someone was working on a simple, clean mobile interface, but a site redesign had to be out of the question.

Our state House of Representatives has passed HB 1906, known by its sexier title, the Economic Security Act of 2009. The bill will temporarily increase unemployment benefits by $45 a week, and jacks the minimum benefit from $129 per week to $155. Out of curiosity, who thinks they can get by on $620 per month? Fun fact courtesy of Chuck Taylor: a back of the envelope calculation puts Seattle's unemployment rate at 15 percent, double the state rate. We also agree that taxing UI benefits is cruel and unusual punishment.

So we'll begin, the guy at the podium said, the huge black blast door in the Microsoft Auditorium at the Downtown Library eased down its track, slowly cutting off our view of the lobby, and we shivered.

Back in our freelance days, Seattlest was happy to get 50 cents a word. So imagine the triple cherries that flashed before our eyes when we learned that down in PDX you can get 250 writers for three measly bucks!

Not since Joe's Asprin Stacking Blog joined forces with Alexis's Rice Crispe World Blog to form Joe & Alex's Little House of Horrors Blog has a merger of this magnitude so shaken Seattle's media environment. Villiage Voice Media, owner of The Seattle Weekly, has announced a merger with alt-weekly publisher New Times Media.

Seattlest is feeling an amount of motivation to write on this subject that is nearing absolute zero, but we already contacted the editors of various weekly newspapers so we feel committed to posting something. The Western Washington branch of the Society for Professional Journalists recently released an avalanche of awards, a great many of which buried the Seattle Weekly under mounds of lucite. Congratulations Seattle Weekly. Seattle's other alternative weekly paper won one honorable mention. For shame, Stranger.

We aren’t over the fact that Portland’s Willamette Weekly won a Pulitzer Prize last week. It’s just so damn impressive, we have to take a moment to dwell on it just a little bit more. The WW is putting on a very good show of playing the whole thing down--it takes a magnifying glass or Google to find any mention of it on their site. Seattlest hopes that somewhere in the background Nigel Jaquiss and company are whooping it up, though.
