In June of 1996, Shawn Kemp had just outplayed Michael Jordan, and even the most pessimistic Sonics fan agreed that the Supes had been a healthy Nate McMillan away from taking the crown. The awful aftertaste of the Denver upset was gone. With a 28-year-old Gary Payton and a 27-year-old Shawn Kemp--two sure hall-of-famers--in their primes, and a solid surrounding cast, the Sonics were ready to dominate the NBA for a few years. Our window was finally here. And then Shaq came to the Lakers.......

--Northwest stocks weren't immune from yesterday's stock downturn. The market is up so far, though. --The state 4A boys and girls tournaments tip off at 9am today. Garfield plays at 10:30am, Franklin at 8:30pm. Webcasts here. --I Make Things visits the Museum of Telecommunication on Marginal Way, which we're ashamed to say we didn't know about. --Popular councilman Peter Steinbrueck won't run for reelection, he'll form a coalition to support a surface/transit option to replace the Viaduct. --Are The Shins really a Northwest band? --The Sonics' Chris......

Since we are trying our dangest to fall in love with the only remaining NBA team in the Northwest, the one with all those Seattle connections, we have mercifully been spared following the Sonics this season. However, we couldn't help but read Percy Allen's article in the Times this morning, which claims that unless the team starts winning by the end of the month, then the coach and some of the players will be leaving Seattle a few months ahead of the team. Honestly, why would you trade......

Brandon Roy, who is as far as we can tell the first Garfield High School Bulldog to play in the NBA, started in last night's hometeam win over the Oklahoma City Sonics. His first touch came less than a minute into the game, when the Blazers' Jarrett Jack stole a Ray Allen pass and started a break. Roy flared out to the left, expecting a pass, but Jack took the ball himself and got swatted by Chris Wilcox. Roy, his nose for the ball as good in the NBA as it......

Seattle's the most well-educated city in the country, says the AP. 51% of Seattle residents graduated college, more than any other U.S. urbanoland. And yet we built two giant sports stadia right next to each other! Go figure. The Woodland Park Zoo artificially inseminated one of its elephants today--Chai, who bore little Hansa five years ago. We're not sure what zookeepers used to get Chai in the mood. If we'd been asked we'd have recommended Erykah Badu...but as the zoo's in Phinney Ridge, they probably put......

Now that they're safely out of the playoff race, the Sonics have started to play well. They've won six of their last ten, including wins against potential playoff teams like the Lakers and Bucks. Last night, against Milwaukee, new acquisition Chris Wilcox had 30 points! We aren't impressed. Late-season competence by non-contending teams is an annual occurrence in professional sports, causing prognosticators to think that next year, they'll be great. Usually not. What causes it? Maybe the no-pressure atmosphere of playing "spoiler." Maybe a long-overdue run of good......

Before we get to the Sonics, let's start off with some humor, courtesy of the Seattle Times' consistenly suicide-inducing "Sideline Chatter." Andy Liney, the man inside the "Donny Dog" mascot costume for the Doncaster Rovers soccer team, was denied access to the playing field for the team's game at Huddersfield Town, England, because police intelligence labeled him a security risk. The cops obviously thought he might be a fleaing felon. Question: Is there anyone--anywhere--who would grant even an appreciative half-smile to that line? Can we give that space to something more......

The Sonics gave up on Rick Brunson, their all-time worst free-agent signing. This offseason, they gave Brunson--who had a foot injury--a guaranteed $1 million contract. Brunson's foot injury never healed. He played four games. You do the math. Note, this is the organization that wants you the taxpayer to pitch in for their new arena. Please. And yet we are stupid too! After the Supes traded for Chris Wilcox, we posed this question: "What can Wilcox do that Reggie Evans can't?" We're watching Chris Wilcox right now,......

The Sonics said goodbye to three-point-shooting forward Dale Ellis Vladimir Radmanovic today. The fifth-year Sonic is headed to the Clippers. In return, the Sonics get Chris Wilcox, a fourth-year center out of Maryland. "In Chris, we get a great rebounder who can run the floor," says Sonics GM Rick Sund. InsideHoops.com likes the deal. Wilcox will rebound and play some interior defense...though we wonder what exactly it is Wilcox does that Reggie Evans, who has languished on the bench under Bob Hill, doesn't. And Coach Hill didn't get......
