We encourage you to be a tourist in your own town, but don't buy the souvenirs. "Space Needle Souvenirs" by Nerds Eye View. WaMu really can't catch a break. The Belltowner and PhinneyWood report that their neighborhood WaMu branches were robbed over the weekend. Mid Beacon Hill explores "cheap South End fun," including a place that should be on the hipster street-of-dreams, and the Museum of Communications. Being a tourist in your own city is......

Capitol Hill's trend-setting WET theater ensemble has a handy flyer about it stapled to telephone poles up and down 15th Avenue. But for those of you outside of flyer range, the play is called Gods Ear: (presumably as in, "From your mouth to..."). By Jenny Schwartz, the play was summed up in the august pages of the New York Times thusly: "a formally inventive and superbly performed drama about how the death of a son......

A perfect sunny afternoon walk around Capitol Hill earlier this week was ruined by the most disturbing thing we've ever spotted on a Seattle sidewalk: a perfectly skinned squirrel, hairless save the still-furry tail. We spotted the poor creature on 12th Avenue, just south of Union. This was not the work of a clever coyote, which do stalk small animals on the Hill. Nope, all of the meat remained on the carcass, so it must......

We don't even know 1621 12th Ave anymore. So much has changed in the building that formerly housed the Capitol Hill Arts Center that it's undertaken a completely new identity. First, there's the obvious: CHAC was kaput as of June 30th (though the un-updated website lives on). Now Velocity is set to move their dancers in, having just signed a ten-year lease, and the news broke last week that Crave would be out of......

Seattle's known already for its pocket-sized parks tucked away on unlikely vistas, but local volunteers in conjunction with the Trust for Public Land have coordinated an event called Park(ing) Day to bring more awareness to the need for community green space. And that's a good thing. Tomorrow, eight close to thirty metered parking spots around the city (click here for locations) will transform into public park land for the day. A few of the sites......

Devil Ducks by Seattlest Flickr Photographer M.V. Jantzen MyBallard has the exclusive: the beloved Archie McPhee's is leaving Ballard. While normally a sentence with puppies can be nothing but delightful, Lights & Sirens managed to write one that is the absolute opposite: "Parkland man who was mauled by puppies dies."Coyotes are not your cat's friend. Pork Pork Pork by our very own scarequotes Like most things we've attempted to borrow from the 70's, modern key parties just don't sound like nearly as much fun. According to the Belltowner, a "lock and key" singles party will be happening at See Sound next week.Capitol Hill Seattle spots a "government money pit."Unsurprisingly, Magnolia and Queen Anne residents aren't too pleased about the idea of a new jail being built smack dab in the......

Face it, folks: it's fall in Seattle, and along with cooler nights, leaves changing color, and the beginning of football season, fall also marks the annual Scion independent film series. Yes, it's corporate-sponsored lifestyle marketing aimed at the hip youth demographic, and yes, they just want the kids to buy their damn cars, but we're willing to shill for it when 1) it's free and 2) the films shown are actually worth seeing. The......

Rudolph Valentino. Ray Charles. Jerry Lee Lewis dancing on pianos, for God's sake! Dance in Seattle had anything but a boring 20th century. We were prowling around the internet this morning and discovered that today is the anniversary of the date the city banned a really bizarre but popular 1920s and '30s fad called "dance marathons" within its city limits. That was enough to pique our interest, and we've spent the day researching what was......

Fuck the '80s. Seriously, one more Mo Rocca VH1 show, one more special dance night, one more themed party, one more fashion comeback from anything hailing from the years between 1980 and 1989, and we're going to lose it. We were there; it sucked. That said, if you're going to throw a play in the basement of La Spiga/Boom Noodle that has an affiliation to the 1980s, you can do worse than to bookend it......

If you walk up or down Pine Street toward downtown, you may have seen a group of people intently watching the dog run over I-5 just to the west of Minor Ave. If you slowed your gait and took a gander yourself, you would have had the shock we did last night of seeing a bunch of goats munching away at the hillside. It was strange enough that we stopped our run to the bus......

Yesterday morning we were biking up to Volunteer Park on sunny 14th Avenue when we saw what seemed like the aftermath of a huge accident: three tow trucks busy with cars, a motorcycle cop, cops in new, unmarked muscle cars, cops in new, marked muscle cars. A little farther down the street, we ran across a Cascade Bicycle Club tent, and our foggy memory kicked in. Ah, Car Free Day. Each block of 14th had......

We're stealing this real estate post almost directly from CHS, who discovered Redfin's cool graphs before we did. But we'll refine the focus to condos to avoid outright plagiarism. Redfin's numbers show that since October '06, the number of Capitol Hill condos on the market has ballooned from just over 100 to just under 250 currently. Meanwhile, the average list price has hovered around $475/sq. ft., while actual sales price has declined significantly since last......

Opening night crowd at this splendid, brand-new Italian eatery is conservatively dressed, considering the Capitol Hill location. One customer in a tank top, one server with a piercing and tats, but mostly it's long-sleeved shirts of muted stripes. The chef, Justin Niedermeyer, wears a vest. The barman, Gavin Morris, serves Seattlest opening night's first negroni. Sometime later, he makes another negroni, but we spot maitre d' Matthew Lawrence taking it back to the kitchen. No,......

Back in February (brrr!), we reported on the venerable Capitol Hill institution, B&O Espresso, being forced out of its longtime location at the corner of Belmont & Olive because the property owners had plans for a multi-story apartment building there. This weekend we stopped in and saw the B&O's owner Majid behind the pastry case, and asked how things were going. Turns out that he's still planning on moving up to Broadway to take over......

We've been doing our fair share of gushing over the new H&M store, but there's fashion doings to report closer to home (i.e., Capitol Hill), too. Under4Men is the name of the new men's underwear store that's opened up in the Loveless building at the north end of Broadway (on Broadway East, as a matter of geographic fact). We were walking by so we popped in to confirm that it is just the kind of......

Not to belabor this story, but we think the issue of the rights of bicycle riders to the road is an important one. We ride on the city streets every day and, though some commenters on our post about changes we'd like to see made to Critical Mass in Seattle think that every driver goes out of his or her way to be respectful to us, we know it's not true. Seattle still has a......

For the record, this Seattlest is a daily bike commuter who knows and appreciates the rights and responsibilities of biking in an urban environment. We also have a friend who was beaten by cops a couple years ago during a Critical Mass demonstration. While this post isn’t specifically about Friday’s incident at Seattle's Critical Mass on Capitol Hill, the event (and one just as scary in New York City) moved us to share these......

"Main Stage Dusk," one of several stitched panoramas by Seattlest Flickr pool member Andrew G Davis. It'd be easy to bitch and complain about certain aspects of the Capitol Hill Block Party. Sure, it attracts a bevy of tools who by the end of the night are barely-standing drunken douchebags. And yes, you have to put up with the poorly-scripted political pablum in between acts. Plus, in the aftermath, there's all that garbage. But......
