The Bad and the Ugly: Text Messages from a Loss to Stanford

vets_day.PNGIn honor of Veterans Day, the Huskies played like the French army in today's loss to Stanford.

No.

In honor of Veterans Day, the Huskies let a World War I vet play quarterback.

No.

In honor of Veterans Day, the Huskies let WWII vet Donald Rumsfeld call plays.

Ugh--three and out. Just like the Huskies, all day.

For you, the reader, we walked through the cold to the Husky game today. We bargained a scalper down and bought tickets with a $60 face for $20. It's the first time we've ever paid 1/3 of face. And we were still ripped off.

We present the game in real-time, from text messages we sent to Seattlest David, who's visiting his alma mater Whitman, which beat Stanford 38-3 last month.

1:10 pm--0-0, 1:07 left in 1st. UW playing ball control vs. Stanford like Hawks did vs. Oakland. Stanford hasn't gotten it past their own 30.

1:11 pm--Huh. Durocher just came in in the middle of a drive. It was 3rd and 3, and they took out Bonnell (turns out Bonnell had a thigh bruise). Also put Kirton at rb.

1:16 pm--27 yard fg attempt by Braunstein. Terrible snap. Barely good.

1:23 pm--Stanford goes nowhere--huskies start at own 25. Durocher still in.

1:28 pm--Huskies go for it on 4th and 1 from their own 35. Terrible idea. Got it by maybe six inches.

1:29 pm--Can't run the ball again. Too many deep handoffs.

1:33 pm--3rd and 9 from own 45, Durocher overthrown Ellis by about 15 feet.

1:35 pm--Should I go join the "veterans and military personnel" parade at halftime? (David's response: No, stand and boo)

1:37 pm--This is what football must have been like before the forward pass. Stanford loses 18 yards in going three and out. Good return of bad punt, UW has ball at Stanford 23.

1:39 pm--On 3rd and 10, Shackleford commits offensive pass int., pushing us out of field goal range.

1:42 pm--We started at Stanford's 23--with our bad offense and a bad punt, they get ball back at the 20. "You belong in the Toilet Bowl!" yells one grandstand wit.

1:44 pm--41 yard pass by Stanford to Husky 38.

1:47 pm--2:28 left in the half and the two teams have combined for 115 total yards of offense. At least the sun is out. And Air Force is beating Notre Dame 20-0 (That's what the scoreboard said--everyone cheered. But the scoreboard was totally wrong, Notre Dame was ahead the whole game (but never by 20-0. Weird.))

1:49 pm--Oh my. Awful coverage by Roy Lewis on pass to UW 4.

1:55 pm--Stanford will try a last second 29yd fg at half. And...they hit it. 3-3 at half of the worst football game I've ever been to. "It's like watching paint dry" says guy next to me.

2:05 pm--39 people in line for Starbucks (I counted). Only way to stay awake.

2:08 pm--Kid in halftime kicking contest outscored both offenses.

2:11 pm--Husky band spells out "Please, kill us."

2:13 pm--Chelsea Clinton at qb for Stanford.

2:18 pm--First play of 2nd half--Durocher throws interception.

2:22 pm--Most exciting moment of game--On 4th and 1, Stanford shifts from punt formation into I formation, then attempts to draw Husky defense offsides with the snap count.

2:24 pm--Wow. Durocher missed a guy by five feet.

2:26 pm--A sack. UW goes three and out. The coaches are steamed, the receivers have given up.

2:27 pm--David writes: Pray this game doesn't go into ot. Our response: It would last until Tuesday.

2:33 pm--Huskies get ball back, on first down run up the middle for a loss of one.

2:35 pm--Wow. Shackleford was 15 yards behind the defense, Durocher either underthrew him or overthrew the underneath guy, Stanford intercepts it, runs it back for a touchdown, Durocher hurt.

2:36 pm--Offense is getting screamed at by two coaches.

2:38 pm--Bonnell back in.

2:41 pm--Huskies get a first down on a fumbled snap. No, really.

2:45 pm--Kind of wish Huskies would go into two minute drill, if only to change the pace a bit and put some pressure on the Stanford D.

2:45 pm--With 3:30 left in third quarter, a team (Stanford) finally gets over 100 yards of total offense.

2:47 pm--Sweetman is warming up--he's the scout team guy.

2:49 pm--Stanford's punter muffs the snap. Dawgs get it at Stanford 34.

2:51 pm--Dawgs try an end-around--Wood drops flip from Bonnell, loss of 12. Someone yells "you look like a high school team." Punt on 4th and 22.

2:51 pm--People are leaving.

2:52 pm--PA announcer: "Tackle by Trenton Tuiasosopo." Some fan nearby: "Put him in at quarterback!"

2:54 pm--Emtman honored at end of 3rd. Loudest cheers of the day for a guy who last played 15 years ago.

2:58 pm--Dawgs defense tagged for pass interference on 3rd down. Bad call.

3:00 pm--And then a 74-yard td pass. Stanford 17-3.

3:05 pm--Don't think we'll be "also receiving votes." Russo drops perfectly-thrown deep ball that probably would've been a td.

3:08 pm--After a five yard run on first down, a dropped pass, a receiver falls down, and bonnell throws the ball into a Stanford lineman's helmet.

3:20 pm--Huh. Huskies d gets a third down stop, calls timeout--with 7:02 left.

3:21 pm--The only fans left are the diehards. And they look pissed.

3:23 pm--UW goes over 100 yards of total offense with 6:35 left in the game.

3:25 pm--Fourth and two on own 30 with 5:55 left, down two touchdowns. What would you do?

That was our last text message. The Huskies answer to the question was throw an interception, so we left. Yuk. I've never seen a team play worse--not even a high-school team. Really. Ugh.
