For Your Consideration: This Weekend at SIFF

siff 2006.jpg

One week of SIFF down, only three more to go. Starting yesterday, the fest moved on up, to the Eastside. Now through next Wednesday, films will be shown in Bellevue at the Lincoln Square Cinemas. From the looks of it, they've got a strong Friday lined up, with the final screenings of The Giant Buddhas, Prairie Home Companion, and Conversations with Other Women.

As a SIFF-related resource, it's worth your time to head over to Jake Ludington's website, where you can download his mp3 interviews with several directors who have films at the fest. Most of interest to us: the interview with Kirby Dick, who made the MPAA-skewering documentary This Film is Not Yet Rated. We also liked getting a look at the schwag in those SIFF Opening Gala VIP bags.

Now, on to the upcoming films of interest. Seattlest applies our well-honed knowledge of all things cinema to the SIFF catalogue in order to point out some notable films playing this weekend:

· Life With My Father Two brothers who couldn't be more different are forced to come together when their bon vivant father returns to town. Sentimental without getting too sappy, the film's described as a "tragicomedy"---but we think that's a fancy way of saying it's true to life. (tonight, 6:45pm @ Pacific Place; tomorrow, 3:30pm @ Pacific Place)

· 13 (Tzameti) This French thriller is way tense. (tonight, 9:30pm @ Pacific Place; Sunday, 9:30pm @ the Neptune)

· 3 Needles This HIV-themed film dramatizes the worldwide pandemic via vignettes that take place in Canada, China, and South Africa. Watch the star-studded cast (Lucy Liu, Stockard Channing, Sandra Oh, and Chloe Sevigny) deal with having AIDS! (tonight, 9:30pm @ the Egyptian; Tuesday June 6th, 9:15pm @ Lincoln Square Cinemas)

· The Family Picture Show Short films get short shrift at SIFF, but this is a collection for the whole family. We'd like to single out simple, effective Wolves in the Woods for its portrayal of a kids' game that takes a very adult turn. (tomorrow, 11am @ the Egyptian)

· Screaming Masterpieces How did tiny isolated Iceland end up producing so much weirdly wonderful music? This documentary covers the Icelandic scene, featuring all kinds of footage of Bjork. (tomorrow, 1:15pm @ Pacific Place)

· Four Stars The con takes place at Cannes. (tomorrow, 4pm @ the Egyptian; Monday June 5th, 7pm @ Lincoln Square Cinema; Friday June 9th, 9:30pm @ the Egyptian)

· The Five Venoms Hong Kong chop-socky martial arts, old school style. (tomorrow, 7pm @ the Harvard Exit)

· Wristcutters - A Love Story This dark comedy about suicide looks better than Patrick Fugit's other film at SIFF, primarily because this one doesn't also star Matthew Lilliard. (tomorrow, 9:15pm @ the Neptune; Sunday, 4:15pm @ the Neptune)

· Destricted A collective work, Destricted features several avant garde directors (including Matthew Barney, Larry Clark, and Gaspar Noé) and their individual takes on sex and pornography. Don't bring the kids. (tomorrow, midnight @ the Egyptian)

· Lassie This one's certainly more kid-friendly. Look, it's Lassie, and this time he's in Ireland! (Sunday, 11am @ Pacific Place; Saturday June 10th, 11am @ Lincoln Square Cinemas)

· 49 Up This is the seventh film from Michael Apted in his series following a cohort of Brits every seven years for their whole lives. (Sunday, 1:15pm @ the Neptune; Wednesday June 7th, 6:30pm @ the Egyptian)

· Black Gold How's that latte, hmm? Does it taste of third-world poverty? This documentary makes the case for free trade coffee by examining the industry in Ethiopia. (Sunday 5pm @ the Egyptian; Tuesday June 6th, 9:30pm @ the Egyptian)
