Seattlest has been a fan of the Hamilton Corner billboard (a.k.a. the right-wing Uncle Sam billboard) between Centralia and Chehalis since our first trip to Portland after moving here in the '90s. We love it in a "defend to the death your right to say it" sort of way.
When sloganeer Al Hamilton died a couple of years ago, we wondered if the tradition would live on. Happily, his family has decided to carry on Al's tradition of crankpottery, as these photos from our weekend trip to PDX show.
We saw the immigration message on the way down, and the Da Vinci Code message on the way back into town.
One part of the Seattle-to-Portland trip that did change this weekend: no more Trojan cooling tower. The landmark was imploded early Sunday morning. Smithers wept. YouTube's got several videos; this is our short, sweet favorite (after the jump):

I love that billboard. It reminds me of a conservative marquee I used to see as a kid that would say things like, "God sees what you're doing, and it's sinful," and "God. Never. Blinks."

My most recent experience with this kind of thing comes courtesy of Wisconsin - Seems like we were passing groups of small "Now Entering Bush Country" signs every couple hundred acres and I think I recall some billboard-sized messages as well but maybe I'm just thinking of this Uncle Sam one.

I went down to Eugene this weekend and saw the same slogans. The weirdest part of the drive(s) was seeing the Trojan cooling tower on the way down saturday, but not on the way back up sunday. Creepy monolith, you will be strangely missed.
Back before 1974 the voting age was 21. This guy was an old racist right-wing fart.
