From Motor City To Jet City

mini-detroitcobras.jpgThere's often a snobbish stigma attached to cover bands. Some such outfits focus on a specific genre, or era, or simply the lowest-common denominator. Others pay tribute to a single band or individual. Transcending 'em all are the Detroit Cobras, who, Tuesday at Chop Suey, will surely kick some election-night ass.

The Cobras specialize in relatively obscure, early '60s R&B nuggets, originally performed by the Shangri-Las, Ottis Redding, Jackie DeShannon and the like, yet they deliver the goods like the powerhouse garage band they are. Leading the revved-up attack is stripper-turned-butcher- turned-chanteuse Rachel Nagy, whose boozy, chain-smoking, foulmouthed delivery only seems to enhance her awesome stage presence. She sings with a cool, slightly detached style, and though she belts out the tunes with fierce conviction and hip-shakin' sass, she makes her job appear deceptively easy.

Filling out the bill are Memphis's Reigning Sound, fronted by ex-Oblivian and current Cobra guitarist Greg Cartwright, and Seattle's Cops. The killer lineup will definitely be worth venturing out into what threatens to be a cold, soggy weeknight.

And, yeah, the Detroit Cobras are still a cover band, but damned if they don't spit out deadlier rock 'n' roll venom than most "original" bands could ever hope to muster. The snobs can scoff all they wanna.
