Attempt Made At World's Largest Insurance Premium

History could be made this Saturday at Pacific Raceways in Kent. Weather permitting.
Simply put, Whidbey Island's Ryan Capes will attempt the world's longest motorcycle jump. He held the world record with a 260-footer until last March, when Trigger Gumm broke it with the current record, a long-ass 277.5-foot leap. Capes planned to reclaim the title in July, but in a practice jump crash, he busted his spleen.
On Saturday, Capes will launch his Honda CR250 off a 12-foot takeoff ramp at 76 m.p.h. He'll soar over a semi and a few Bradley M1 tanks before landing on a dirt ramp, hopefully some 280 feet away. That's twice as far as legendary daredevil Evel Knievel ever flew (including when, in 1970, Knievel himself performed at Pacific Raceways, then called Seattle International Raceway.)
Capes is also the likeliest candidate to clear the seemingly impossible 300-foot barrier, a football-field distance that daunts today's cycle jumpers just as the four-minute mile once daunted runners. It's doubtful Capes will try for the full 300 on Saturday, but we do predict a new world record. Weather permitting.
Tickets available through Ticketmaster.

Newsflash: On Saturday afternoon, Ryan Capes set the new world record, as we predicted. In doing so, he also cleared the 300-foot mark, as we doubted. The new mark? A monster 310 feet, four inches. Helmets off to Ryan Capes!
