Nestled right in the heart of downtown Seattle is a little bit o' free WiFi. Of all places to find out about this little gem, I came across it while viewing pictures of Seattle on Flickr. So take your laptop to Westlake Park and go surfing. thnx dantc
According to the press release, dated February 7th:
The Downtown Seattle Association (DSA) is introducing free wireless Internet access, also known as WiFi, in Downtown Seattle's Westlake Park on 4th and Pine. The "hotspot" is currently live and will transmit Internet access throughout the park (bordered by 4th and 5th Avenues and Pike and Pine Streets).
To get on the network you just have to use the SSID code: freedowntownwifi
According to the Seattle Times and my own Airport Card, Seattle is teeming with "hotspots". In fact, a UW professor has created maps of the city's reported 5,225 wireless networks and made them available on his department web page.
The Times reports that:
The corner of Third Avenue and Columbia Street, for example, has some of the densest Wi-Fi coverage in the city.
With all these WiFi hotspots and WiFi snoopers, it takes grassroots organizations like Seattle Wireless and Caffeinate and Unstrung to sort out and document the WiFi locations.
Seattlest has personally benefited from open WiFi networks. Riding the 355 express through Greenwood and U District, there is just enough time at stop lights and bus stops to check email or load a couple web pages. At least two friends of Seattlest's mooch off their neighbors WiFi. Sharing is great, just be polite!
